AARP Research Study Explores Why People Are Happy

           “Good conversation, meeting new people while traveling, and being in good health” brings much happiness to long-time Pawtucket resident Jean Babiec.  The former Providence school teacher, in her eighth decade, added she would be ‘extremely happy’ if the Rhode Island General Assembly passed legislation, signed by Governor Lincoln Chafee, to create a Pawtucket Red Sox vanity license plate.

           At-Large Pawtucket City Councilor, Lorenzo C. Tetreault, 65, is “the happiest when he can help others.”  The retired Pawtucket teacher is also happy when he holds his one-year old twin grandsons from Narragansett, Samuel and Benjamin, in his arms.

           Former Pawtucket Tax Assessor, Dave Quinn, 64, who now oversees the Tax Office in the City of Providence, finds happiness “knowing that his family is healthy and his children are doing well.”  The Seekonk resident also feels happy by being intellectually challenged by his job.

           Babiec, Tetreault and Quinn’s statements on what makes them happy are reflected by others documented in a recently released AARP study on what happiness means to aging baby boomers.  The findings of this report indicate that relationships and being in control of your health and life are key factors in bringing happiness into your life.  

Defining Happiness

            The new AARP study, titled “Beyond Happiness: Thriving,” found that most Americans age 35 and over are happy, but compared to historical General Social Survey (GSS) data, levels of happiness are on the decline and at their lowest levels (due in part to the nation’s economic downturn).  In an effort to explore what happiness means to aging baby boomers and what it takes to thrive as they age, over 4,000 adults age 35 and over were surveyed to determine what makes them happy.   

             “We’re always looking to get a more robust understanding of the contributors and barriers to happiness in people’s lives,” said Steve Cone, Executive Vice President of Integrated Value Strategy, AARP. “Building on previous AARP research, which shows the importance of happiness and peace of mind to aging baby boomers, these new results affirm that we are on the right track—advocating to ensure basic health and financial security and making available everyday discounts that let people enjoy time with family and friends.”  

             According to researchers, the findings of this study reveal the existence of a U-shape curve of happiness by age. The early 50s is the lowest point from which happiness builds. Thus, if you missed happiness in your 30’s, there is still another chance to achieve it in your 60’s.

             The Researchers note that as people age and eventually retire, they can devote more time to building relationships and just enjoying simple everyday pleasures.  Younger people are still working hard to solidify their accomplishments.

           The AARP study’s results also provide four key insights around the drivers of happiness.

The Happiness Spectrum

            Overall, the strong majority (68%) of respondents say they are happy, although intensity of happiness is somewhat tempered as the largest percent report being somewhat happy (49%) versus very happy (19%). Almost half of those surveyed feel they are just as happy as others (49%) and the rest tend to believe that they are happier than others (31%) as opposed to less happy than others (13%). Part of this may be attributed to the perceptions of people being the masters of their own happiness destiny.

            More interesting, the respondents were concern for the happiness of the next generation. Less than half feel they will be as happy or more (45%). Most are either not sure (19%) or believe they will be less happy (35%).

Relationships Key to Happiness 

           The AARP survey findings also indicate that regardless of your age, good relationships with friends, family, and even pets, were found to be universally important. Activities associated with those relationships contributed most to a person’s happiness. The most significant activity was kissing or hugging someone you love.  Other activities included: watching your children grandchildren or close relative succeed; being told you are a person who can be trusted or relied upon; spending time with your family or friends such as a meal or social gathering; and finally, experiencing a special moment with a child. 

            Researchers say that relationships with family pets were especially important to women, singles and older individuals.  However, relationships did have to be real: “connecting with friends or family on a social media site like Facebook” came in 37th out of 38 activities in contributing to happiness. Importantly, none of the top contributors require a lot of money to achieve; they are “simple pleasures” that can be had by all.

 Good Health Linked to Happiness 

          Without good health, it is far more difficult to achieve happiness: people in “good or excellent” health are three times more likely to report being “very” happy, the researchers say.  However, one’s health may be more a state of mind than objective reality.  The findings noted that the percentage of those reporting good health is relatively stable over the ages 35 to 80, varying only seven percentage points, even as reported chronic or serious medical conditions increase 400% in the same age range. 

Calling the Shots, Brings Happiness

          The majority of those surveyed feel they have control over their personal level of happiness. Interestingly, this sense of control increases with age. Moreover, people who feel in control are clearly happier—reporting that they are 2.5 times happier than those who believe happiness is out of their control. The study’s findings indicate that a sense of control is linked to higher income, higher education, good health and the lack of having experienced a major life event in the past year.

Money Does Not Always Guarantee Happiness

            While many will say having money can bring happiness, this research study showed that it seems that how one spends it seems to matter more.  Happiness increases with income and conversely, lack of financial resources was tied to unhappiness. While less than a third of participants said money contributed to happiness, when asked how they would spend $100 on something to increase happiness, most respondents said they would spend it on their family or going out to dinner. Money is only a resource, that when applied to meaningful areas of one’s life, can provide experiences that can increase happiness.

Documentary Explores World of Alzheimer’s Victims, Caregivers

Sally Weiss, my 80-year-old mother, has Alzheimer’s disease.

Over the past seven years, the progression of this disease was noticeable to me when I made my trips back home to Dallas, Texas.

However, my family, just like the tens of millions of families across the nation who have loved ones afflicted with this mental disorder, tries to understand and cope with the emotional social and financial impact of this devastating disease.

Last Wednesday, a hard-hitting, nationally broadcast PBS program, “The Forgetting: A Portrait of Alzheimer’s,” sought to bring more “insight, context, hope and help” to viewers who tuned in, hoping to better understand this frightening disorder.

The 90-minute documentary explores Alzheimer’s disease by weaving together the history and biology of the disease, the real-life experiences of three Alzheimer’s patients and their families who lives are touched by Alzheimer’s and the latest research findings that may lead to a cure.

Shame on you if you missed last week’s showing of “The Forgetting,” but you’re in luck, especially if you want a second chance to see the PBS program before it comes out on video. The Rhode Island PBS program affiliate, WSBE 36, has scheduled a rerun of this broadcast for Jan. 29 at 9:00 p.m. and again on Feb. 5 at 2:00 p.m.

The PBS documentary is based on David Shenk’s best-selling book, “The Forgetting.”

After overhearing a conversation in a restaurant about a man and his wife- a woman in her 50s afflicted with Alzheimer’s – he realized that this woman could not recognize her husband. By the time Shenk left the restaurant, he was horrified at the thought of his wife not even knowing who he was, being a stranger to her during the best years of their marriage. This thought ultimately propelled Shenk, a journalist and occasional National Public Radio commentator, to explore the mysteries of Alzheimer’s leading to the writing and publication of his 292-page book.

The PBS documentary warns that with the graying of our nation, we will see a growing number of person’s afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease which is considered  to be an age-related disordered.

By 2011, the first of the nation’s 76 million baby boomers will turn age 65, ultimately setting off a demographic time bomb, creating this Alzheimer’s epidemic.  When this occurs, Alzheimer’s may well become American’s biggest public health concern.

Using special animation, “The Forgetting” helps viewers better understand how Alzheimer’s begins, how it does damage and what kind of new medical treatments are being used to treat it.

“The Forgetting” also focuses on the real-life stories of three families, showing how the disease slowly impacts the family caregivers and the loved ones afflicted with Alzheimer’s.

“Like so many coping with this tragedy, the families who share their stories in  “The Forgetting” all have one major motivation in common – they want to let other people facing similar situations know that they are not alone, that there is help and that they too, can find the strength to face a  tragedy like Alzheimer’s with dignity and grace,” said Elizabeth Arledge, a respected film producer who created the PBS documentary, in a written statement.

“These families are drawing on reservoirs of strength and compassion to stay focused on seeing the person they love instead of the symptoms of the disease,” added Arledge.

Liz Morancy, executive director of the Alzheimer’s Association’s Rhode Island chapter, calls of Rhode Islanders to watch a Rhode Island PBS program. “The 13th State,” on Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2004 at 7:30 p.m.

Scheduled one day before the re-airing of “The Forgetting,” the 30-minute local PBS program will feature a panel discussion about Alzheimer’s.

Panelists included Dr. Cynthia Holzer, of Roger Williams Hospital, along with 84-year-old Sterling Ivision, who is in the early stages of Alzheimer’s, and his daughter Kate Meleny.

“The Forgetting’ shows what a really hard, hard disease Alzheimer’s is,” said Morancy, “but by listening to Ivision, you will learn that he still drives and lives independently. People who have early-stage Alzheimer’s can still have a quality of life.”

Entering One’s 60s Marks a New Beginning

During the turbulent 1960s, young protestors would say “Never trust anyone 30 years old.

Forty years later, the younger generation sees the benefits of successfully making it to age 30.

Last week, an article in a local newspaper even told readers – the twenty something crowd now celebrates their entry into their 30s. This life stage decade has now become a major milestone in growing older.

Aging baby boomers realize   they care entering their senior years when they receive AARP’s invitation to become a member. This little notification announces your chronological age is quickly tilting  toward your later years. Some would joke your senior years.

What about moving into your 60s. You’re still at the peak of your professional career, but five years shy of age 65, society’s milestone for moving into the rank and file of the retired.

Dr. Justin Aurbach, a Dallas-based endodontist, who also happens to be my brother-in-law, recently turned age 60. He told All About Seniors some of his thoughts about becoming a 60-year-old.’

While some become frail or face debilitating chronic conditions as they enter their early 60s, my aging brother-in-law is still in relatively good shape. He acknowledged that he can’t run a four-minute mile, but he never could at any age. But the 60-year-old plays a little golf, walks, jobs, and does a little light weightlifting. He’s a believer in vitamins and takes “lots of them.”

“Professionally, I believe I am on the top of my game and still improving. Not only am I technically better, but my years of life experience have made me wiser in respect to knowing what can and can not be done in my life,” Justin said.

Researchers have found that being plugged into a network of family and friends is a key ingredient to successful aging. Justin told me he has been very lucky to have numerous friends who have part of his extended family.

“They are the kind of friends who will go to bat for you when the chips are down.”

Family support is very important to Justin, who recognizes their positive support to him throughout the years.

“My wife has always been supportive of me both in my professional endeavors and personal goals,” he said, bragging about his three children and two granddaughters, he said.

Looking back over the years, Justin relives the ups and downs of his life. “There have been times of sadness, during my 60 years,”

he said, like the loss of his mother, common parental problems that he experienced while raising his children and failure to quickly achieve some of his professional goals. Looking at the glass half-full rather than half empty, he added. That’s just a small price to pay for all the wonderful things living brings to you.”

As Justin  looks into the next decade, he said he wonders if there is enough time to accomplish all of his personal and professional goals.

“I certainly keep forging ahead at a break neck race,” he said, noting new goals will always replace those that have been accomplished.

“Some of the accomplishments in science and technology, like the breaking of the sound barrier, the development of computers and nuclear energy, advances  made in medical technology leading to the advent of non-invasive texts, the near elimination of many dreaded diseases and a greater understanding of genetics and molecular biology have resulted in significant human lifespan,” Jusin said.

Justin noted being age 60 becomes even more wonderful when you look back on what you have accomplished.

But in your 60s, “It’s a time of excitement, fun and learning,” he said, urging others to never stop learning and gaining more knowledge.

At age 60, Justin firmly believes his life is just beginning for him.

He urged those turning this age to look at the vent with joy because you are coming into the “best part of your life.”

“Age is more than a matter of your chronological age, it is a combination of your attitude and mental state you have about your life,” he said.

For this writer, aging has always been like a bottle of wine, as you age you get better just like the wine.

For those turning age 60, exercise and eating a healthy diet, developing a strong support network, and continuing to learn and seek out knowledge is important. Now is the time to  take some time to reflect upon the ups and downs of your life and use the knowledge and wisdom gained to make better choices into your later years, the 70s and beyond.

Most important, share your newly gained insights with your children, grandchildren, and younger colleagues. Give them the gift of your hard-earned insights.

Justin said turning age 60 is like a new beginning for him.

“I feel like a newborn who is just beginning his trek into the wonderful world we live in,” he said.

Hopefully, all those entering their sixth decade will have that positive attitude about aging, too.
